Empowered to Speak, Committed to Change

Recently, I reached a pivotal point in my healing journey, one that allowed me to give back to my community in a meaningful and impactful way. Through counseling and therapy, I gained the courage not only to share my experiences but also to stand alongside others who have faced similar challenges. What once felt impossible—speaking my truth, listening with empathy, and remaining grounded—has become a platform for advocacy. I realized that staying silent does not protect anyone; it allows harmful patterns to persist. Using my voice is now a conscious act of resistance, empowerment, and change.

I began reclaiming my story through writing and public sharing, breaking the silence that so often surrounds abuse. This choice, while difficult, is a declaration: survivors deserve to be heard, supported, and empowered. By speaking out, I am not only working to protect my children from generational harm, but I am also helping others find their voice and strength. The freedom I discovered through advocacy feels like shackles falling away, fueling my commitment to ensure that no one faces these challenges alone. My journey has evolved into action—proving that personal healing and community impact can go hand in hand.

A few weeks ago, a news reporter approached me about a petition I had been sharing alongside an advocate, Renee. I felt deeply passionate about Renee’s petition, which holds abusers accountable and provides additional protections for victims of abuse. I never anticipated that sharing the petition online would create a platform for me to spread awareness and amplify the voices of survivors. I was asked to tell my story and explain why the petition was so important to me. While I was aware of potential repercussions, I knew this was an opportunity to advocate and create meaningful change.

Because I felt nervous about the process, I consulted those I thought might hesitate—especially my children. I explained that a reporter wanted to cover a petition I believed could help victims of abuse. Their responses surprised me. Rather than discouraging me, they encouraged me to move forward, telling me I no longer needed to shield them. When the story aired, they even asked to see it. Their comments—“Mom, you were all the way at the end,” and “You didn’t say very much”—made me smile. I reminded them that the story was about the petition, not me, and their understanding and support was empowering.

Through this experience, I connected with and supported individuals affected by domestic abuse. The number of people impacted by abuse is heartbreaking, and all too often, survivors are silenced, isolated, and made to feel ashamed. Many are torn down emotionally and physically, controlled financially, and trapped in fear, making it nearly impossible to leave. Having the opportunity to provide resources, listen, and remind survivors that they are not alone has been profound. Witnessing the growing community support for the petition further reinforced the importance of advocacy and collective action. I am deeply grateful to be able to speak up, help others, and contribute to change.

My hope is twofold: to empower my children to break harmful cycles, and to provide them—and others—with the tools, resources, and support needed to stay safe and hold abusers accountable. Beyond that, I want to continue helping survivors find the strength to leave toxic situations, reclaim their lives, and grow as individuals.

I owe everything to my support system, and I am profoundly thankful for the opportunity to give back, raise awareness, and advocate for those who have been silenced for far too long.

I’ve stayed grounded despite false narratives, finding freedom and peace in the truth—using my voice to help others and build a safer, brighter future for my children and those who need hope.
